I have good news to report on rat poisoning in Central Park and Tompkins Square Park.
Both parks are now using mechanical traps. The Boathouse is using mechanical traps with a non-toxic bait for tracking rodents.
It is certainly a much better situation though not ideal. The painful death of a fellow animal in one of these mechanical traps is nothing to celebrate.
The traps are placed inside the regular poison boxes so at a glance one cannot tell if there is poison or a mechanical trap.
Squirrels are likely to venture into these traps and get killed.
For now it is a great improvement over toxic chemicals but we must continue to be vigilant and keep coming up with better and safer ways to keep a healthy balance with Nature.
Natural predators and proper garbage management are the best solutions for rodent control, and in all NYC parks hawks are attempting to take residence on their own.

"Maki pellets contain the advanced single-feeding anticoagulant - Bromadiolone", not difethialone as labled above.
Bell Labs Product information
First of all the rodenticide 'Maki' contains bromadiolone NOT difethialone. However this is just an incorrect label but still both products being used by Tompkins Park (according to the signs posted), are lethal to non-target animals;
MAKI--active ingredient Bromadiolone.
GENERATION-- active ingredient difethialone.
