Dear Mr Benepe,

This letter was inspired by your response to Ms Sandy Schnettler on April 22, 2009 in which you defended Central Park’s rodenticide usage.
From the tone of your letter I have concluded that you are unwilling to address the specific issue at hand in Central Park affecting Palemale & Lola, and instead made general statements about rats and wildlife. As such I will address and challenge the points you made in your letter item by item;

Rats pose a risk to public health and safety. They contaminate food, damage structures and property and transmit parasites and diseases to other animals and humans.

Can you provide proof of food which was contaminated in Central Park?
Can you provide proof of structures and or property which were damaged by rats in Central Park?
Can you provide proof of any cases of animals and or humans which received parasites and or diseases from rats in Central Park?

We must protect people from the dangers of an uncontrolled rodent population and we provide a variety of methods to do so, including improved sanitation, signage, baiting and relying upon natural predators.
Please refer to the following links which certainly disqualifies ‘improved sanitation’.
Link #1: http://palemale.us/eaday4.html
Link #2: http://palemale.us/boga.html

I’m not sure how ‘signage’ relates to rat control.
Too little thought went into listing ‘baiting’ and ‘relying on natural predators’ since the former is destroying, or has the potential of destroying, the latter.

Can you give me an example of any effort Central Park has made to ‘protecting Central Park’s wildlife?

‘Paramount’ is defined by Merriam-Webster as: ‘superior to all others’.
How is CP’s wildlife is of paramount importance when you allow ‘catch & release’ fishing in Central Park’s water bodies--an activity which produces dangerous discarded fishing line, hooks and lead sinkers in and around the water bodies where this cruel pastime is practiced?
