Lola, with Pale Male in the back - Sunday January 8, 2006
To some of us they are two creatures that can be easily identified in common field guides and that their phylum, class, order, etc., fits nicely into rows and columns of our own design - and that there exists some sort of finality in the slot where these creatures are logged. I like to believe that there is another kind of observer somewhere out there that did a different type of cataloging of Earth’s living organisms and even its non-living entities. Even if I won’t believe that their method can possess any finality either, still it will be interesting to thumb through their field guide and discover what another type of thinking produces.
I would just love to discover the name given to the creature we call ‘Red Tailed Hawk’ and to see which attribute that cataloger felt was more worthy to identify with this beautiful entity. And the chances are that this other cataloger had no reason to be on some slave plantation in Jamaica so that country’s name would be of no importance in any facet of its naming.
Maybe if we all read this alternative field guide it may have a sobering effect on who we are and it may help to reduce our arrogance and put a check on the notion that we’re superior to all the obviously more intelligent creatures around us. I eagerly await the publication of such a field guide.
