Petition to ban NYC Carriage Horses
Another meeting concerning the NYC Carriage Horses:
Community Board 4 Transportation Planning Committee
Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at 6:00 PM
351 W. 42nd St. Holland House, Basement Theater

Sorry for not following up on the meeting held in January. I was so disappointed with the whole mood of that meeting that I became disenchanted. The meeting was held in a tiny room too small to accommodate the many dozens of people who had to stand outside unable to hear what was happening since there was no voice amplification in the room. Inside the cramped space, many people spoke and poured their hearts out in two-minute limited testimonies which all but one supported an outright ban on this horrible trade. A single person represented the Carriage Horse Owners/Drivers—the substance of his speech was that he owns seven horses and he is an animal lover and his horses love to work for him.
A bigger disappointment for me was hearing The ASPCA position—their testimony came from a uniformed officer complete with firearm strapped to his side. The ASPCA is not supporting a total ban, but is asking for the horses to be restricted to Central Park only. My personal opinion is that the ASPCA really do not want this trade to end, so it can remain an ongoing issue--one to continue receiving donations for them to ‘fight’. I nevertheless still hold hope for this tedious battle and hope that it will come to pass that these poor animals will soon get the freedom they rightfully deserve.
Again the glorious human language stands in the way of having the right thing done. He who speaks words with more syllables shall win. When once a person speak with their heart they are looked down upon. Some time ago I spoke with a very learned person in the legal profession about The Carriage Horses; he told me if I ever used the words ‘look into the horse’s eyes’ to any sober minded person they will discredit me from having any sort of rational intelligence.
